New Pulmonologist Joins Medical Staff

With the addition of Dr. Frederic D. Seifer to the medical staff at Heritage Medical Center, Pulmonary Medicine and the newest technologies supporting the treatment of pulmonary disease are now available to for patients seeking help with disabilities associated with lung disease.
Frederic D. Seifer, M.D., FCCP, pulmonologist, with patient wearing the VEST which delivers a new treatment technique for pulmonary disease.

Respiratory health depends on consistent clearance of airway secretions. Normal airway clearance is accomplished by two important mechanisms: the muccociliary clearance (MCC) system and the ability to cough. Impaired MCC is linked to poor lung function in a broad range of diseases including but not limited to the following respiratory conditions: cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, COPD and asthma.

Because at-risk individuals are prone to recurrent episodes of respiratory inflammation, infection, and eventually irreversible lung damage, improvement of MCC is a vital treatment goal.

Dr. Seifer offers airway clearance therapy through new, proven technology called the VEST. The immediate goal of airway clearance therapy is to effectively clear pulmonary secretions. The VEST delivers high frequency chest wall oscillations that gently compress and release the chest wall up to 25 times per second. These compressions create mini-coughs that dislodge mucus from the bronchial walls and move it towards central airways where it can be easily removed by coughing or suctioning.

Airway clearance therapy is safe for both children and adults. If you have an interest in learning more about the VEST, please call Dr. Seifer’s office at 931-685-8725.
